Descartes Meditation Essay

Descartes holds that you are more brain than body. Do you concur? What kind of need does he expect? † In the Meditation Two: Concerning the Nature of the Human Mind, Descartes depicts himself â€Å"as in the event that I had out of nowhere fallen into a profound whirlpool† (pg. 492), communicating the need to stir his way up and get back on track the day preceding. He essentially shouts that he will put off all questions and â€Å"suppose that everything is bogus (492)†. In this contemplation he plays on the idea that the brain is more prominent than the body. In some respects’ I do concur with what Descartes is stating about dualism idea and how we are â€Å"thinking things (493)†. I accept the psyche is more significant in some way than the body on the grounds that the force the brain needs to think, reason, make, dream, envision, accept, retain, respond, want, feel, and the capacity to know and have unlimited thoughts. Descartes concurs that he â€Å"doubts, comprehends, insists, denies, wills, won't, and that likewise envisions and faculties (494). †In this segment I do concur with Descartes on his perspective on this â€Å"thinking thing†. The psyche is unbelievable to such an extent that we people can’t handle the multifaceted edifices that the brain has. At the point when Descartes portrays the wax model I was somewhat confounded yet in the wake of evaluating the idea I have come to acknowledgment that it bodes well. I think Descartes was edgy to discover away, some approach to portray the significance of the psyche and utilizing this delineation was an innovative method to do as such. So he depicts this bit of wax how it’s hard and cool, pliable, has a slight nectar flavor (494). At that point he portrays what befalls this wax when it experiences the diverse temperature cycles and how the structure of the wax changes and so on. So we realize that when the bit of wax is experiencing those physical changes it despite everything stays to be a similar piece. So observing that we comprehend that the hard bit of wax and now liquefied bit of wax have the equivalent properties’ must not simply originate from the faculties since the entirety of the reasonable properties were changed. As Descartes depicts that â€Å"the feeling of smell, sight, contact or hearing has now changed; but the wax stays (495). † So from this one may believe that the creative mind is the thing that this bit of wax is, however Descartes shouts, â€Å"Therefore this understanding isn't accomplished by the workforce of creative mind. Rather he infers that â€Å"I (Descartes) see it through the psyche alone. † Learning this outline is shows the significance of the brain and the physical body. That the body can take on a wide range of changes, yet the brain is excellence behind everything. I can’t state that I concur with everything that Descartes is attempting to communicate, however I do concur with the reality there are hard ideas to get a handle on and comprehend. We each have interesting brain, and understanding the psyche will require some serious energy and will take persistence.

Definition and Examples of Composition-Rhetoric

Definition and Examples of Composition-Rhetoric Creation talk is the hypothesis and practice of showing composing, particularly as it is done in piece courses in schools and colleges in the U.S. Otherwise called organization studies and piece and talk. The term organization talk underlines the capacity of talk (with its 2,500-year convention) as a fundamental hypothesis of structure (a moderately new development, as Steven Lynn calls attention to in Rhetoric and Composition, 2010). In the United States, the scholastic control of arrangement talk has developed quickly in the course of recent years. Models and Observations At the point when we examine talk and sythesis, we are truly discussing a substantially more intricate arrangement of cooperations than the expression suggests. Our academic writing is overflowing with instances of talk for sythesis, piece responding to talk, and talk in arrangement. Of these, talk in structure gives the most chances to coordination of explanatory hypotheses and the instructing of piece. Be that as it may, we appear to be effortlessly diverted the dubiousness of and, the appearing straightforwardness of for. (Jillian Kathryn Skeffington, Looking for Rhetoric in Composition: A Study in Disciplinary Identity. PhD paper, University of Arizona, 2009)When conjoined with piece, talk is commonly comprehended as the more extensive field of topic. Be that as it may, numerous who find themselves in piece contemplates . . . recognize their scholarly undertakings with an assortment of more extensive information ventures other than or rather than talk. These incorporate, for exam ple, proficiency, semantics, or talk considers; social examinations; English; English training; and correspondence. . . . School creation itself (initially first year recruit English), when isomorphic with the entire field, is presently just one concentration inside talk and arrangement, which has gotten dynamically more interwoven with various, equal, or transdisciplinary investigations of talk. (Organization Studies. Reference book of Rhetoric and Composition: Communication From Ancient Times to the Information Age, ed. by Theresa Enos. Taylor Francis, 1996) Foundation of Composition-Rhetoric As a group of data, composed talk was brought into being somewhere in the range of 1800 and 1910.Since, along these lines, the techniques and hypotheses related with encouraging writing in America after 1800 are neither constant, nor bound together, nor genuinely current in todays academic field, nor firmly identified with conventional talk, I propose in this book to shun the term current-customary talk and to allude rather to more established and more up to date types of structure talk. History lovers will perceive that I have appropriated the term from the title of a forward-looking however not extremely fruitful reading material created in 1897 by Fred Newton Scott and Joseph V. Denney. Like Scott and Denney, I utilize the term to distinguish explicitly that type of expository hypothesis and practice gave to composed talk. Composing, obviously, had consistently been a little yet vital piece of the more established logical custom, yet arrangement talk after 1800 was the pri ncipal talk to put composing halfway in expository work. (Robert J. Connors, Composition-Rhetoric: Backgrounds, Theory, and Pedagogy. College of Pittsburgh Press, 1997) The Development of Composition-Rhetoric Studies: 1945-2000 At some point between [the end of World War II] and 1990, a large group of graduate projects, insightful diaries, and expert associations devoted to piece talk contemplates rose in North American advanced education. Notwithstanding the proceeded with grievances raised against it, the first year recruit course itself persevered and developed during this period; yet now undergirding it was a true blue scholastic order, progressively self-sufficient from different fields and equipped for overseeing, developing, and scrutinizing that course yet of supporting full and autonomous educational plans at both the undergrad and graduate levels, rich and apparently boundless research extends, and devoted scholarly professions of each position and residency. Before the finish of this period, comp-rhet flaunted book arrangement, blessed seats, award programs, look into focuses, and profoundly upgraded scholarly and proficient fearlessness. . . .[B]y the mid 1990s, there were in excess of 1,200 com p-rhet doctoral understudies in the United States, concentrating in seventy-two diverse alumni programs, together allowing in excess of a hundred PhDs per year (Connors, Composition History 418). . . .Before the finish of the twentieth century, at the end of the day, utilizing the doctorate as the key marker of scholarly status, a control had been conceived. (David Fleming, Rhetoric Revival or Process Revolution? Reestablishing Rhetorics Relation to Composition: Essays in Honor of Theresa Jarnagin Enos, ed. by Shane Borrowman, Stuart C. Earthy colored, and Thomas P. Mill operator. Routledge, 2009) [A]ll territories of the humanities aside from one have experienced extraordinary decreases. That one field is structure talk considers, which . . . keeps on prospering among the second arrangement of downsizings, the 1990s rendition. For what reason is organization talk excluded? One of the different answers is that we have established the New Paradigm for our 30 years of development as an order. To put it plainly, the general population, which all in all sees however can't eloquent that language study is fundamentally significant, bolsters enormous help of the educating of composing and the examination that goes with and drives it. . . .In spite of the fact that we are inundated in college societies that see investigate as the pinnacle, educating as the valley, and administration as the underground (so it is imperceptible), arrangement talk researcher instructors grasp teaching method, take a stab at it, share ebb and flow explore with understudies, and by and large have a personal ity (or what Diotima or Aspasia may call an ethos) where instructional method is conclusive. (Kathleen E. Welch, Technology/Writing/Identity in Composition and Rhetoric Studies: Working in the Indicative Mood. Living Rhetoric and Composition: Stories of the Discipline, ed. by Duane H. Narrative Essay (Life is Full of Mistakes)

It was a brilliant, cloudless radiant Thursday evening around 2pm; my mom and I chose to go shopping for food. As she passed through the carport, she saw a DHL conveyance bundle dropped before the house dated third of March, 1988. When opening the bundle, a critical admonition letter was address to her from my primary school Principal. Promptly, she opened the letter and read through it, her eyes turn red and began yelling on me! Saying; why not focus on your examination? Immediately, I began crying so intensely. Out of nowhere, she quiet down and took a gander at me with complete love and said; â€Å"This is only an admonition letter.†Then, guarantee me that she will be there for me as far as helping me with my investigations and day by day schoolwork. Also, she clarifies that one should never surrender and to continue attempting. Actually, the misstep I made was not focusing on my training, which prompted an admonition letter from the school Principal that I would not be per mitted to return for my last year of primary school since I had not kept up 5 passed subjects. Actually, not going to class routinely, not getting my work done, and not doing some additional perusing at home had caused the letter sent to my parents. This botch got me in a tough situation with my mom. To start with, I felt diminished with the inspirational statements I got notification from my mom and pondered what to do to bring my evaluations up. Rapidly, I resolved to concentrate so hard all together not to get the last admonition letter from the Children's House School head. Out of nowhere, my closest companion came into my home and chose to get me out with a portion of my schoolwork subsequent to seeing the letter. We read together that very day, he demonstrated me the least complex method for completing wholes. Likewise, disclosed to me that he will take me to a portion of the fly scholarly rivalries to get more information and skills. On getting to the stream rivalry, I saw a gr eat deal of understudies from various schools partaking in the opposition. Furthermore, what astonished me at the opposition is that the main arithmetic inquiry tossed to my companion at the occasion was a similar one we both illuminate together, and he furnished a right response when working it out without burning through much time. Toward the finish of the opposition, I learn distinctive sort of strategies on the most proficient method to stay up with the latest scholastic status from the understudies and this extremely busted my self-assurance that I can make it as well.Second, In request to bring my evaluations up I needed to go to class routinely and give more consideration in class. Truth be told, I was missing school since I did not have the intrigue and this influenced my advancement in the entirety of my classes particularly science and science. These subject educators didn't need any of their understudies to miss over five days in an exercise. In the event that we do, we w ould lose fifty focuses, which joined to our warning evaluation. Truly, I had missed ten days and I lost my hundred focuses. Moreover, these educators ordinarily conversed with me and expressed, â€Å"You are one of my most loved students.†They cherished the degree of my support when I was in a class, however I needed to come to class more since I was continually stepping through the exams late. After they addressed me, I started to begin going to class more for an ideal participation. Indeed, I understood that not exclusively was I harming myself yet in addition harming my instructors too. The two of them saw such a great amount of potential in me. Third, another issue is that I don't generally accomplish my home-work after school. Consistently after school, I would spend time with my companions at the school playing field. Actually, I was not considering my significance, I was just pondering having pleasant.Eventually my mother laid down the law and requested that I should return straight home after the end school hour to accomplish my home-work, and she expressed that when I returned home from school, I felt so drained that I would not be capable do any of my home-work. What's more, she proceeded with that coming straight home from school as opposed to hanging out could improve progress in a class. In actuality, basic science and arithmetic subjects need a lot of additional training after school hour. Besides, I was taking rudimentary science and arithmetic, and I bombed them twice. These classes included a ton of perusing and explaining, and I didn't invest a lot of energy rehearsing for these classes, as I ought to have. Actually, I dropped out of these classes in light of the fact that my last score was low; I realized that I was unable to deal with these classes. In this way, looking on the most proficient method to improve my evaluations, I understand that am a tough individual. In actuality, I was not used to having a passing mark, however I did n't go about as though it was the apocalypse. At that point, I basically changed such a great amount in my examining propensities and the school participation. Truth be told, I decided not to have an evaluation underneath 5 pass subjects again.Lastly, I made it to the following class level with the assistance of my companion, class educators, and my folks. Besides, I am doing my best not to get the evaluations I had for the main term of my lesser year. Truth be told, I had gained from my errors and I fixed them. During the second term of my lesser year, I had battled a great deal and my expectation is to passed 5 subjects or above and I did. All in all, presently I felt so cheerful that my scholarly learning abilities have improved than previously and the experience I had from the fly scholastic rivalry changed my life.Additionally, my mom thoughts of checking my class-work progress and saluting me on my little triumphs in day by day tests normally truly spur me to improve and give me progressively certain of getting through any forthcoming class-work, test, and test. At that point, I kept up the status of competency up to the optional school and to the school level. What I understood about perusing, going to class routinely, and getting my work done is that it makes me more grounded and improved the degree of my Intellectual reasoning aptitudes.

How to Achieve Brand Consistency in Your Franchise

Running a business, in any capacity, takes hard work and perseverance. Specifically, though, for a franchise, there's a whole different set of unique challenges for both franchisors and franchisees. The primary challenge comes down to providing a consistent experience. It's simple: A franchise must provide a consistent brand experience across each of its locations. Related: Franchise development—what you need to know What's not so simple is ensuring that every part of operations is being done the same way. How can you ensure that brand messaging and logos are easily accessible and up-to-date, or that the service is as good as it should be at every single one of your locations? This article should provide you with a start on how to achieve brand consistency in your franchise. Make sure franchisees know the importance of reputation management Let's first discuss your online brand image. This directly affects how customers feel about your brand. A positive reputation is something that's hard to get back once it's ruined. There are a variety of different platforms in which customers can communicate with other customers about your brand including Yelp, Google, and other forms of social media. Chris Conner, president of Franchise Marketing Systems, advises, "Right from the initial training with the franchisee, the franchisor should be educating and informing franchisees how brand management and reputation management are important and part of their operational responsibilities in running the franchised business." Conner adds: "Once a franchisee is operating and running day-to-day, the franchisor should have regularly scheduled calls with franchisees where reputation management is part of that discussion and addressed in each interaction." "Franchisors who are able to grow their networks effectively typically have incredibly strong and consistent mechanisms in place to monitor, respond and execute brand management responsibilities," he concludes. Maintain digital consistency In order to maintain consistency where franchisees communicate with customers online, you need a clear-cut digital marketing plan. The plan should include guidelines for how franchisees communicate via social media, blogs, emails and webpages. Make sure you provide franchisees with easy access to logos, font style, imagery & photos, brand tone and language. Social media is an integral part of our daily lives. Each location should have a separate Facebook and Yelp page so customers can visit locations and leave reviews. Whether each location needs a separate Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Google+ or Instagram account is truly dependent on the brand. Create a detailed social media policy answering questions like: What type of content should be posted—and what should not be posted? How should complaints and negative reviews be dealt with? You can streamline social media with a process to approve anything that goes out, create templates, or offer pre-approved content. That way, you don't have to micromanage content for too many locations. Let your franchisees know what your brand is Franchisors need to feel confident about the brand before communicating what that brand is to franchisees. This encompasses everything from company-wide goals to how everyday operations are run. Ask yourself the following questions, and once you're confident in your responses, make sure your franchisees know it, too. What is the brand? Your brand includes the characteristics of your company that make it relatable to people. For example, popular sandwich franchise Subway is a casual, no-frills restaurant where customers can expect consistent, fast service with fresh ingredients. What is the company's mission? What are its values and goals? Subway strives to serve fresh, delicious sandwiches that are made-to-order right in front of the customer. The team at Subway lists out three core values and principles on their website. "Always provide exceptional service to your valued guests." "Provide the highest quality menu items at a price everyone can afford and enjoy." "Keep operating costs low and ensure you have great systems in place and never stop improving." What story do you want to tell? Subway offers healthy sandwiches at convenient locations around the world. Subway shows their customers that they have nutritional & community responsibility by "building stronger societies," according to the company. Who is buying your product or service? How do you market to them? Today, it's easier to understand who your customers are and what they're looking for. According to customer identity company Signal, personalization is an important part of marketing for brands. When it comes to franchises, that means being able to speak to people in different markets on a personal level. For example, franchises can offer personalized online communication experiences (e.g. paid advertising, personalized emails, etc.). Don't forget the details It might be obvious, but staying consistent in a franchise is about every little detail. Gary Findley, CEO at Restoration1 and established franchise sales expert, writes that consistency is the most important factor when it comes to business success. He writes, "Balancing brand uniformity while respecting franchisee independence and regulating brand messages while effectively targeting local communities are two of the struggles that often arise." To help achieve this balance, there needs to be a consistent aesthetic, product & experience at each location. Aesthetics. From the color of paint on the wall to the uniform staff is wearing, there should be consistency to how a business looks and feels. If you walk into a Subway in the state of New York, chances are it's going to look the same as in Colorado, Washington and anywhere else. Product. If people are seeking one of your locations, it's because they crave that same product they know and love. People don't go to Subway because they want a local sandwich. They go to Subway because they crave the taste they're familiar with. Experience. Just as customers want the same product or service they can find at all of your locations, the same is true for the experience. Experience encompasses everything—the music playing in the background, the seating, how to place an order or make a purchase, and the behavior of the employees. Employees have to be trained consistently on daily operations, including how to interact with customers, how involved they are, and how to handle complaints. For example, if a few locations are taking too long to prepare food—and your brand is known for speed—that will be a problem for your customers. Marketing. Each franchise needs to be consistent with how they market and who they market to. Determining which types of marketing campaigns & advertising techniques work best for your brand is the first step in implementing consistent franchise marketing. This includes having specific brand guidelines for your franchise and what you want your franchise to look like. Strengthen franchisor / franchisee communication Determining how each franchisee should operate and what brand consistency looks like is only half the battle. The real challenge comes in longevity: making it last. To build long-lasting marketing and operations, use the following process. Set clear expectations. Whenever a new franchisee opens a location, hold a thorough training where franchisees gain an understanding of your expectations. Outline everything in a manual to reinforce the goals. This includes everything from hiring procedures to aesthetics. Illustrate why this is important. Don't just leave instructions on how to do things, but be sure franchisees understand the reasoning behind it. Staying consistent is going to create customer loyalty, brand recognition, and ultimately, a more successful business. Explaining the benefits will encourage everyone to stay on target. Communicate regularly. Plan to talk as much as necessary to succeed. Offer positive feedback when you see a franchisee doing things right, and of course, provide constructive criticism and encouragement when things need to get back on track. Key takeaway It can be difficult for a franchisor to maintain consistency across marketing and operations within a franchise... while also targeting local customers in different communities. Don't give up on making your franchise marketing consistent. For the best results, make sure franchisees know the importance of reputation management. Stay consistent with messaging across digital platforms, educate franchisees about your brand, pay attention to the details, and keep the lines of communication open. The Threat Of Environmental Harm - 1255 Words

The doubt surrounding possible threats to environment has often been used as a reason to avoid taking action to protect the environment. However, it is not always possible to have clear evidence of a threat to the environment before the damage happens. The Precautionary Principle has been widely incorporated, in various forms, in international environmental agreements and declarations and further developed in a number of national laws. An element common to the various formulations of the Precautionary Principle is the recognition that lack of certainty regarding the threat of environmental harm should not be used as an excuse for not taking action to avert that threat. Fracking is shorthand for hydraulic fracturing, a type of drilling that has been used commercially for 65 years. Today, the combination of advanced hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, employing cutting-edge technologies, is mostly responsible for surging U.S. oil and natural gas production. Hydraulic fracturing involves safely tapping shale and other tight-rock formations by drilling a mile or more below the surface before gradually turning horizontal and continuing several thousand feet more. Thus, a single surface site can accommodate a number of wells. Once the well is drilled, cased and cemented, small perforations are made in the horizontal portion of the well pipe, through which a typical mixture of water , sand and additives is pumped at high pressure to create micro-fractures in the rock that are held open by the grains of sand. Additives play a number of roles, including helping to reduce friction (thereby reducing the amount of pumping pressure from diesel-powered sources, which reduces air emissions) and prevent pipe corrosion, which in turn help protectShow MoreRelatedEco Terrorism and Violence in The United States1656 Words   |  7 Pages Eco terrorism has been said by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be the most significant domestic terror threat facing the United States today (Environmental). Pleasantville Essay Example For Students

Pleasantville Essay If you think about it, today’s world is not such what we call â€Å"user-friendly† place. Unemployment, severe diseases, global droughts and other dreadful natural disasters thatare about to happen to our lives. Even better, the more time passes, the more chances youget to face them in the future. But what the heck, everyone will eventually face all of thoseproblems one day. Danger, devotion, abomination, curiosity, and alterations are alwayspresent in our lives. You might think that Pleasantville is pleasant. Well do I have somenews for you: nope. The name â€Å"Pleasantville† is just a simple irony that’s all. In Pleasantville, everyone is so empty in their minds. For instance, every characteralways did the same thing over and over. It’s like everything falls into the right way that itshould be. The basketball players always score, the wives are always cooking and takinggood care of the husbands and children. Husbands are working, children are little preciousangels who never get in any kind of trouble. No worries, no problems, just plain goodstabili ty. There is no wrong for them because everything was in sync. It would be really tough to adjust to that kind environment where everythingbecomes dull and unbearable. No color, no fire, nothing exciting except the way Bud madeevery shot to the basket without even trying to. No changes what’s so ever. As soon as the characters saw changes, everything was getting completelydifferent. Not like the Pleasantville that everyone new. Color, was the maintransformation. All of the sudden things turned colored. Why? Because of the changes thatwere not supposed to happen in that town. Then people turned color. Why? It’s a mysterySome people from the audience say that the characters turned color because theyfelt some extreme feeling towards something, someone, or even themselves. Like the otherscene where Betty was in the shower. Now that was a real knockout, wasn’t it? All of thesudden she saw many colors, and then another major change happened: fire. No one sawfire before in Pleasantville except David and Jennifer. And all off the sudden it was like achain reaction, change after change after another change. Other audience say that the reason why people changed color is because of analteration or a small shift in their lives. Again Betty for instance, she fell in love insomeon e else. A small change in her life cause a small displacement in Mr. Johnson’s lifeWhen some people became different, in color wise, than other people, prejudiceoriginated in town. All of the sudden you see discrimination such â€Å"No coloreds† sign wereseen at some stores. That cause a major crisis in the city. Violence, fights, jealousy andabhorrence among the people towards each other. That symbolized to show the real life in1950’s unlike the â€Å"pleasant† as it seemed on the television. If you ever saw a movie â€Å"Matrix†, â€Å"Pleasantville† actually reminds me of itsomehow. Where people take things for granted, where they don’t question their existenceand where they live in a life which is made up especially for them. In that life, some detailsare absent. For instance, since no one went to the bathroom in the show by the script, thetoilet bowls were not there. Since â€Å"safe sex† was suggested in the show, a man a nd awoman had separate beds. The Milgram Experiment Essay Sample free essay sample

Stanley Milgram. a celebrated societal psychologist. and pupil of Solomon Asch. conducted a controversial experiment in 1961. look intoing obeisance to authorization ( 1974 ) . The experiment was held to see if a topic would make something an authorization figure tells them. even if it conflicts with their personal beliefs and ethical motives. He even one time said. â€Å"The societal psychological science of this century reveals a major lesson: frequently it is non so much the sort of individual a adult male is as the sort of state of affairs in which he finds himself that determines how he will move ( Cherry ) . † This essay will travel over what Milgram’s purpose was in this experiment and what it truly did for society. The Milgram Experiment was on obeisance to authorization. which raised a series of controversial and ill-famed societal psychological science experiments in which survey topics were asked to make things that conflicted with their ain witting. The survey looked at how people would respond in making something they would usually non make when reacting to the petition of an authorization figure. Stanley Milgram recruited the topics by puting ads in the newspaper for 40 work forces ; the topics did non cognize they would be paired with a Confederate of the experimenter who would present as the victim ( 1973 ) . In exchange for their engagement. each individual was paid $ 4. 50 ( Cherry ) . The topic and the Confederate were to take part in the experiment which analyzed the effects of penalty on the ability to larn. Milgram wanted to turn out whether people would obey authorization figures irrespective if the undertakings asked to be performed were morally incorrect. Each participant took the function of a â€Å"teacher† who would so present a daze to the â€Å"student† every clip an wrong reply was produced. The â€Å"teachers† were asked to administrate dazes runing from 15 Vs to four 100 and 50 Vs to â€Å"student† . who the topics thought were besides participants in the experiment but merely actor’s. In world the actor’s didn’t receive any dazes. but acted as if they were being hurt by the electromotive force ( Cherry ) . The histrions were asked to reply inquiries. and when an wrong response was given the topic was told by the experimenter to give the histrion a daze. ( Voltage increased after each incorrect reply ) . After a unsafe degree of electromotive force was applied. the histrions screamed out in hurting. and so fell to the land. non reacting to the experimenter or the topic. Many topics were said to demo marks of hurt at this point. but after being prompted by the experimenter to go on on with the experiment. and addition degrees of electromotive force ( Cherry ) . Over 65 % of participants continued to electrocute at deadly degrees. and who is to state that most of us wouldn’t have done the same? After all. psychologists foremost predicted that merely about 10 % of people would really follow through ( Cherry ) . After the experiment topics were debriefed. and told that the participants they administered dazes to were really histrions. The topics realized the inhuman treatment of their actions and some suffered emotional interruption downs. Milgram stated. â€Å"Ordinary people. merely making their occupations. and without any peculiar ill will on their portion. can go agents in a awful destructive procedure. Furthermore. even when the destructive effects of their work become obviously clear and they are asked to transport out actions incompatible with cardinal criterions of morality. comparatively few people have the resources needed to defy authorization ( 1974 ) . † His experiment merely proved that when placed in a state of af fairs of force per unit area. people tend to conform to the petitions of an authorization figure. because they would hold no duty over their ain actions by obeying bids. â€Å"At the clip Milgram’s survey was large intelligence. Milgram explained his consequences by the power of the state of affairs. This was a societal psychological science experiment which appeared to demo. attractively in fact. how much societal state of affairss can act upon people’s behaviour. The experiment set off a little industry of follow-up surveies carried out in labs all around the universe. Were the findings still true in different civilizations? By and big the replies were that even when pull stringsing many different experimental variables. people were still unusually obedient. ( 2007 ) † Between the Milgram experiment and all the other small experiments ended up raising a batch of oculus foreheads and controversial treatments about the moralss of making such research. Subjects were exposed to emotional emphasis. psychological emphasis and physical emphasis while being in the experiment ( Cherry ) . Milgram wanted to reply inquiries which plagued society for a long clip. such as â€Å"Was human nature inherently evil or could sensible mean people be coerced by authorization into executing unnatural actions? † Many believe the survey to be unethical due to the fact that the topics were non to the full cognizant of what it was Milgram was making. The topics were deceived into believing they were doing hurting and agony to another human being. when in world the victim was non in any agony or hurting at all. The fact that they believe they were doing hurting to person else could hold caused the topic to go psychologically and emotionally distraught in the long tally. The topics were lied to when they were told the experiment was approximately punishment being a factor in acquisition. when in world the experiment was about the topics ain obeisance to authorization figures. Because of the emphasis that a batch of the topics experienced after the experiment. the experimental codification of moralss was placed under reappraisal. It brought so much tumult amongst the psychological universe and caused the codification of moralss to be reviewed and finally changed. The clause â€Å"No mental injury should come to participants† was added to the ethical codification in the terminal. â€Å"Milgram’s experiment has become a authoritative in psychological science. showing the dangers of obeisance. While this experiment suggests that situational variables have a stronger sway than personality factors in finding obeisance. other psychologists argue that obeisance is to a great extent influenced by both external and internal factors. such as personal beliefs and overall disposition ( Cherry ) . † In my sentiment I can see the good and bad in this experiment. I believe that Milgram proved his theory in the terminal. However. it is dubious that any new experiments will be conducted on this topic due to the up boom around it. In the terminal it’s up to each person to do their ain opium on it an d make up ones mind what it means to them with merely the consequences we have. Plants Cited Cherry. K. ( 2012 ) . Cannes Essays - Cannes Film Festival, Palme DOr, Grand Prix

Cannes Essays - Cannes Film Festival, Palme DOr, Grand Prix Cannes The History of Cannes Lord Brougham, a former Lord Chancellor of England is the person that is credited with ?inventing? Cannes when he was detained there while on a trip to Italy in 1834, because an order prevented him from crossing the Var River to Nice. He liked the place so much that he built an Italianate villa on a hill jut outside the town and persuaded his friends to live there. His friends enjoyed the winters because the climate was so mild. Other of his friends built homes and the village later became a town. Forty-five years later Cannes acquired many spacious villa almost fifty hotels and a had a very good thriving market in house-and-estate building. On the hundreth birthday of Cannes the citizen had made a statue of Lord Brougham and celebrated with a week of festivities. Important members of Queen Victoria?s court visited for some of the holidays. When these people arived the citizens of Cannes would stop practicing some of their costumes such as carrying the dead uncovered through the street for burial. The Film Festival As time past more and more people became attracted to Cannes. Famous stars of the 30?s came and decided to make a film festival in 1938. But it wasn?t officially done until 1946. Internationalism and postwar optimism characterized the first festival. In later years the selection of entries for prizes reflected more commercial interests and the festival soon acquired its current reputation as a fashionable professional event. By this time the festival was more concerned with the advancing the film industry that the art of film. Francois Truffaut addressed these issues in 1956 and the festival was almost destroyed. The festival survived. In 1959, Traffaut was awarded the prize for best screenplay for Les Quatre Cent Coups or The Four hundred Blows. Despite the financial interest and the and political overtones the Cannes Film Festival remains an essential showcase for international cinema. The Awards Up until 1954, the jury of the Cannes Festival awarded a "Grand Prix du Festival International du Film" to the best director. The prize-winners of the "Grand Prix" and other main awards would receive the work of a contemporary young painter or sculptor. At the end of 1954, the Festival's Board of directors decided to replace the "Grand Prix" with the "Palme d'Or", in reference to the City of Cannes' coat of arms. Legend has it that the original drawing of the palm leaf was done by Jean Cocteau. Reality is more prosaic than the myth. In 1955, the Board of directors asked several jewellers to present their projects of a palm leaf for the awards to come. Lucienne Lazon was the winner of the contest. The project became the "Palme d'Or", the highest reward given annually to the best director. Since then the "Palme d'Or" has become the Festival's logo. Originally, the palm's stem rested on a heart-shaped pedestal made of a sculpture in terracotta by S?bastien. Since the early 1980's the round-shaped pedestal has been progressively transformed and by 1984 took the shape of a pyramid. In 1992, Thierry de Bourqueney redesigned the palm leaf, placing it on a hand-carved crystal pyramid. The "Palme d'Or", presented in a red morocco casket with white suede lining, is given to the prize-winner during the awards ceremony. The "Palme d'Or" is the most valued and long-awaited of all the Cannes prizes and is announced at the end of the ceremony. On occasion the "Palme d'Or" award has been shared by two directors, as was the case in 1961 with Luis Bunuel's "Viridiana" and Henri Colpi's "Une aussi longue absence", and more recently in 1993, for Jane Campion's "The Piano" and Chen Kaige's "Farewell to my Concubine".

Economic Implications for Producer Investments in Value-Added Business Research Paper

Economic Implications for Producer Investments in Value-Added Business - Research Paper Example This has resulted in the increase of production costs and lowering of profits for the grower of commodities that run the cycle of human existence. Consequently, the producers are identifying opportunities for their own growth and investing in value addition of the products that they produce. This removes many of the intermediaries in the supply chain resulting in lowered prices for the consumer and increasing profits for the producer. For today’s growers, the reins of the future are in their hands. Producer investments in value added business with a workable strategy is not only lucrative but also increases the potential of the producer with minimum output, therefore a very attractive option for the producers around the world. Economic Implications for Producer Investments in Value-Added Business The global economic spectrum has changed drastically in the last decade. The rise in population, inflation and prices of raw materials has changed the economic equilibrium that existed in demand and supply change. With the rise in population, the demand for food items is also on the rise resulting in increasing demand of agriculture produce. This should mean higher income opportunities for the producers. The fact is the other way around due to the rise in the prices of raw materials required for agriculture and diminishing consumer capability to buy. As a result, the returns that the farmers and the ranchers earn on agriculture produce decreases thereby affecting the entire rural class that makes up a good number of populations in many agriculture-producing countries. To get higher returns, more farmers and growers are investing in their produce to make them more value added even to the level of retailer. With the final produce reaching the stores and retailers directly from the prod ucers, the profit margins for the agriculture related people has increased significantly resulting in growth of agriculture and of economic prosperity of the growers. Another benefit that the farmers get through these investments is freedom from industrial exploitation making it very beneficial for them (pg11-18, Tadlock Cowan, 2003). The Need of Producer Investment in Value Added Businesses The growing competition in the global market is changing the attitudes of the farmers by motivating them to improve their quality of produce by employing latest technology in farming and growing. Today, the farmers know the market economies and the latest technology that they can use to convert their produced raw material to more finished goods. The modern growers keep in the view the requirements of the end-user of the produce and try to develop the products keeping that in mind. This bold change in the

Cause and effect (Why I choose my major) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Cause and effect (Why I choose my major) - Essay Example I desire to be part of this phenomenon, now as a student and later as a teacher. Being the product of a mother who teaches elementary school, the importance of learning, of being educated and of educating others has been conveyed to me on an everyday and more than just by words alone from the time of my earliest childhood memory. It caused me to look at learning differently than most other students in my age group. Many kids thought of school as a punishment of sorts, something they had to do much like chores or eating their peas. I didn’t relish every minute of every class, like all teachers or enjoy all homework assignments yet knew of the important component of each. From the boring classes I learned, ultimately, that making class-time interesting or even fun made learning more effective. From the particularly tough classes I learned that every child learns at a different pace and are simply better at some subjects than others. Though it is impossible to fashion a lesson plans that fit the needs of all students, it is possible to make two paths of lear ning, one for those who pick up the information quickly and one for those who do not. If the teacher is really interested, has a passion for the job, they can find a method by which to positively affect the most students in the time available. This is what was going through my mind in third or fourth grade as I sat in class. I was destined to teach. Beside my mother, several teachers inspired my desire for a career in education. Some, because they were so disinterested in their chosen profession, motivated me and possibly as much as any other. I could readily see that the students were not only as disinterested as the teacher but their perception that school was punishment was reinforced. This negative perception was transferred to other classes which diminished the student’s entire educational experience. The damage to their lives is incalculable. If the fire of knowledge acquisition is not lit as a

Third World and Children Essay Example for Free

Third World and Children Essay Children are humans. With this sentence I want to start my assignment, because after having read the paper you will find a deeper meaning in these words. There are many kinds of institutions who work under the umbrella of the United Nations and fight for the right of human. One of these types of institutions is the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, shortened UNICEF. I chose to write about the UNICEF, because I would like to give my point of view about this organization. UNICEF is an important organization for the international cooperation between different countries. I think if there werent such an organization, children had to suffer even more. There are a lot of children who get help from UNICEF, but yet there are millions who are still suffering. It is of essential importance that there are such organizations who help the children in difficulties and suffer, especially now in the third world countries. UNICEF offers help for children with difficult circumstances. In all parts of the world, for example: Kosovo, Zambia, Colombia and Vietnam. UNICEF works in 189 countries and is one of the biggest UN-organizations. They give people food, safety, water, help in illness and education. I admire the work UNICEF is doing, especially for the children who have to suffer. History of the United Nations and UNICEF December 11th 1946. The World War II has just been ended and many cities and villages have been destroyed through bombings. On the farms not much was grown and most of the factories didnt produce, because there was a lot of damage caused by the war. Also the stores were not open so there was not much food. Especially the children had to suffer of all this chaos. The United Nations was formed shortly after the war to try and create peace. Countries who joined this organization sent their delegations to the Headquarters of UN. They came together to find a way for solutions for different kind of problems. The delegations worried that Europe may not recover of all the damages caused by the war if there could not be done anything about the situation of the children. In this year the delegations decided to set up a fund to help the children in Europe who had suffered from the World War II. This fund was called the UNRRA (United Nations Rehabilitation and Relief Administration). Later the General Assembly changed the name in UNICEF. The first delegations of the UNICEF started their work by providing blankets, milk and food. Also health care of the children was an important priority for them. Providing milk to the babies was necessary, because the factories in Europe were all closed. Milk became scarce and precious. The delegations took the responsibility to help as much as they could to prevent the hunger those days. UNICEF worked together with the local authorities, help organizations and farmers to increase the milk production again. UNICEF strove that, when they left an area or country, the local population was able to hold on the milk production. In the year 1953 UNICEF operated worldwide and became an organization of development cooperation which was directed on helping mother and child. In the sixties the help of UNICEF became more structured and emphasized the family, local community and the society as a whole. Moreover education received more attention. In the year 1989 the Conventions on the rights of the Child got accepted by almost all the UN-member countries. Only two countries (Somalia and the USA) didnt sign the treaty. All rights of the child were mentioned in this treaty. These rights refer to all the children of the world, boys girls, black white, poor rich. You can think of the right of growing up in a  family, right on protection against child labour and right to having a safe and healthy life. These kinds of rights in the treaty are the basic foundation for UNICEF. Article 45 of the treaty says that the organizations of the United Nations, like UNICEF itself, can advise governments so that there can be an administration where the child gets the first priority. 1990 is the year when the World top for Children was held. The result of this event is an action plan for the children worldwide. In 2002 again such an event took place to see if the participated countries had reached their goals concerning the children. The result is negative. So the 189 countries who joined the World top for Children, accepted a new action plan including more than 20 goals for the next ten years. Conventions on the rights of the Child The main target of UNICEF is to see that all children get the care and the education that they need for having a good childhood. I still think that this target hasnt been obtained completely, because not all countries stick to the rules which have been described in the United Convention of the Rights of the Child. As I said earlier, almost every UN-member country signed the treaty which refers to rights of children from all nationalities. The seven most important rights of the child, which have been supported by the UNICEF have not been observed yet by all 189 countries. I will give my opinion on each of these rights. 1. The right of equality Equality means every child deserves an equal treatment. But still I see a huge gap between the children who grow up in Asia/Africa and children in Europe/America. UNICEF strives that one day the gap will not be so big between these countries. I think that UNICEF has already done a good job by supporting this right and make work of it. I also believe that every child  has the right to plan his or her life in their own way to make it interesting and active. A child deserves the same rights as his or her peer, no matter where they live. If we enjoy a good life here in Europe, I think that the people in a poorer country deserve the same. Sometimes I feel I am lucky that I enjoyed my childhood with children from the same age. It is a sad fact that in a lot of countries children still can not enjoy this treatment of being equal to the ones in a rich country. I hope to see difference in this situation. UNICEF is encouraging authorities all over the world to observe this right. 2. The right on special protection UNICEF not only provides children with physical and mental protection but also with social development. For example, iodine is a chemical nutrient, which every human being needs for his health. When a pregnant woman in Africa with a lack of iodine gives birth to a child, then there is a big chance that the baby will be handicapped. I consider this matter as a huge problem, as this influences the future of a lot of children. This right can give a special protection to these kind of children. UNICEF helps a lot of countries in Africa by providing salt added with iodine to prevent more handicapped newborns. This will give the children the opportunity to live a life in a proper way. It is a step towards a future with perhaps a job and an enjoyable life. In all parts of the world, you will find millions of street-children, working children, war children and orphan children. These children need extra protection. UNICEF tries to get them out of the miserable life situation. Street children can go to a house where they can eat, drink, sleep and go to school. 3. The right to have a name and nationality When a child is born, then he/she should have an identity through a name and nationality. This right guarantees him to grow up in freedom and to develop  into an adult. But yet there are children who may not know the name of their parents or even whether their parents are alive or dead. This right, which the UNICEF also supports, gives every child the opportunity to have an identity. I see this right not as an important one, because I cannot place myself in this kind of situation. For children who dont carry the name of their father or mother, this right is a must. Anyway, I think that every child deserves this right. This right helps the children to be treated equally. 4. Right to have food, home and medical care Having a home, food and medical care for both mother and child is a way to decrease the death rate among children. Malnourishment is a result of lack of proper food. I think this is a reason why so many children have to suffer. I even feel guilty at times when I think about the children who cannot even have one proper meal in a day, meanwhile I am having food which I like to eat. For example, a child in Sri Lanka has to work from morning till night to earn the money to stay alive. What if the child gets ill? Then he will not earn anything and will get weaker. He has no money for a normal medical care and no money for food. He has no other choice but to work while he is ill. I cannot imagine myself being so poor and hungry. Here, when I get a flu I refuse to go to college or work. And still I have food, home and medical care. It is sad that the child in Sri Lanka doesnt have the same choice like I do. UNICEF tries to change this situation. It supports projects which help countries by providing all kind of services, like giving food or a shelter to the orphans. 5. Right to have special care When a child is psychically or mentally disabled, it should get special care. This right is not only meant for those who have the money for the special care, but also for those who cannot afford this. I think you can have the right of equality when you also keep this right in honour. If a child in a third world country has to suffer from a disability, it is not his fault. So I would say that the right to have special care is an option for them as  well. 6. Right to be loved and understood This right is very important according to me. A child also needs the attention from his or her parents and environment to live a good life. Children in the third world countries are not able to enjoy this right, because there is no time and the possibility for it. Some of them do not even have parents to receive love from. I think a child is very sensitive and does not know what is happening in the world. If there is nobody for the child to protect him or her of all the cruelty in the world, he or she will lose the youth. A child will not be able to enjoy his time and will grow up two times faster than someone of his/her age in the west. That is not acceptable. Everyone should have the right to be loved and understood, especially those who live in the third world countries. 7. Right to have free education In the developing countries a lot of children cannot go to school. I think this is the most important right for a child. This right guarantees you a future. It is not fair for those who cannot pay school fees. Education must be a number one priority. Children are our future. How can we hope for a good future if the children cannot go to school. I am glad that the right of free education gives the children in the developing countries the right to grow up and to have a job. This way they can also be able to choose to become someone they want to be. In countries like Pakistan, children have to work at a very young age to earn the money for their parents as an extra income. UNICEF has set up a project where the child has to go to school for three hours after doing his/her job. I think this as a positive solution, because you cannot forbid a child who has to work hard to survive, unless someone with lot of money is supporting the child, which happens seldom. I respect UNICEFs work, because even if they cannot stop children from working, they help the children to enjoy the right to go to school for a minimum of three hours a day. Future of UNICEF UNICEF has existed for over 50 years and achieved a lot. The goals they are planning to achieve in 10 years will be successful if they keep up the work like they are doing now. Even I would like to see a change in the life of those children who cannot enjoy their childhood. I dont think that I as an individual can help the millions in need, even though I want to. I just gave my opinion on every right a child deserves. If the authorities will work more actively to fight for the right of the children, the future can be changed in a positive way. I hope that there are many people who appreciate and support UNICEF. I know for sure that in the future I will donate money to this organization. I would also like to see that UNICEF will be there in the future as well. There is still a lot of work to be done to change the future of the children all around the world. As I said earlier that children are human too. And every human being should know his/her own right in this world. I do not think that a childs life here in a western country has more value than to a child in a third world country. To prevent this thought, I am glad to see that there are rights to treat every child in the same way. Unfortunately, the reality is that a child in a third world country is be treated as an adult. He or she has to work from a very young age. This is a strong reason why I want to see UNICEFs work in the future. Cable and Internet Networks Essay -- AOL DSL Internet Connection Essay

Cable and Internet Networks   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In most cases cable or DSL companies such as Comcast or DirectPC are just a single type of Internet connection company. But sometimes companies acquire these one-connection companies to make their companies bigger and better such as AOL buying Time Warner. As these companies get bigger and start to offer more types of connections they also start to have more security conflicts. AOL’s software for its dial up connection has a firewall built in to it, the firewall protects it users from hackers and unwanted programs from running. And the software works almost perfectly for keeping unwanted people or programs out, but the only catch is you have use their software. Road Runner, which is now part of AOL, is a cable company, which only provides high-speed Internet access, not full proof security. This problem leaves you open for hackers that are randomly barraging Internet connected PC’s with â€Å"pings† or â€Å"port scans†, probing to fin d unprotected PCs. Once found, a hacker can compromise your PC with a dangerous Internet threat such as a Trojan horse, spyware or even a malicious worm (Zone Labs).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Since AOL doesn’t provide any type of firewall or hacker protection while you have a cable connection with them they do suggest certain types of firewall software to buy. For single end users they suggest you use firewall software like Norton’s Personal Firewall, which costs around $49.95, or NetBarrier 2.0 if you own a Macintosh. Both of these software packages include basic features for a single end user, for instance the ability to delete your cookies and the ability to set up filters or rules to a computer. For network users AOL suggest that you use firewall software such as ZoneAlarm Pro 3.0 which costs $49.95 for a one-user license and goes up from there. ZoneAlarm Pro 3.0 not only provides cookie control, pop-up ad control but also provides email protection and it can suspend 46 different file types. Unlike other personal firewalls, ZoneAlarm Pro includes Program Control to protect against known and unknown threats. With ZoneAlarm Pro, you can control the ability to specify which programs are trusted to access the Internet, by monitoring all outbound traffic. You can also block and make your computer invisible on the internet-â€Å"if you can’t be seen, you can’t be hacked† (Zone Labs). Another type of software that they sugge... ... cases like if you have nothing on your system now, but the only sure, secure way to know that your computer is going to be safe from hackers, when your on the network or working on your computer at home is to turn it off when your done with it. Pre 1900 and Post Poetry Comparison: Christina Rosetti Essay

In this assignment I will be analysing two poems, ‘Cousin Kate’ and ‘The Seduction’. Christina Rosetti wrote ‘Cousin Kate’ in 1879. In this poem Christina describes a cottage maiden who was discovered by a wealthy Lord who appears to fall in love with her but deceives her because half way through it becomes apparent that he is using her for her ability to have a child. The Lord desires a son in order to have an heir to his belongings. During his time with the maiden he comes across Kate who is the maidens younger cousin. The Lord then ditches the Maiden for the younger sexier cousin Kate. When the Lord is with Kate the Maiden discovers she is pregnant with the Lords child and has a baby boy. She has mixed feelings for her son, as she is ashamed of him because she is not married to his father but also proud of him because he is hers. The Maiden does not inform the Lord about their child. Kate fails to inform the Lord that she is incapable of having children because she knows that if she tells the Lord he will ‘dump’ her for another. The Seduction is written by Eileen McAuley and is based in the 1980’s in Blackpool. The poem is about a teenage girl who goes out clubbing for what seems to be her first time. Half way through the night a boy about the same age persuades the girl to join him at an unromantic place near a river and gets her heavily drunk. He then seduces her into having sexual intercourse. Then after 3 months she discover she is pregnant due to that one nightstand. The main elements of ‘Cousin Kate’ are love and relationships, marriage, motherhood abuse of power and wealth, betrayal and the roles of the female characters. I will start with the element of love, there are three different types of love and relationships shown in ‘Cousin Kate’. One type of love and relationship shown is the true love given from the Cottage maiden towards the Lord and the relationship she had with him. She would over look everything he did to her, which he threw back in her face when he ditched her for her cousin Kate. It became apparent that all he wanted from her was the sexual pleasure. The other kind of love and relationship is the pretend love that Kate shows the Lord. She didn’t care what the Lord did to her because all she really wants is his money and wealth. The Lord also shows pretend love towards both the Cottage Maiden and Cousin Kate, he shows this love in order to use them for his pleasure and also to help him get a son/heir. He also couldn’t care less about his relationships with them as long has he got what he wanted. Next I will move onto marriage. There is only one marriage in this poem and that is between cousin Kate and the Lord to quote the poem â€Å"he bound you with his ring†. Kate obviously is only marrying him for the money as she does most things with him for that reason. Motherhood only comes into the poem at the very end where the cottage maiden has the Lord’s child and feels mixed emotions about him, as she is ashamed of him because she is not married to his father but also proud of him because he is hers, to quote â€Å"My fair haired son, my shame, my pride†. Abuse of power and wealth and betrayal enter the poem through the Lords actions like his ability to get whatever girl he wants for whatever he wants e.g. when he goes after the maiden, she falls in love with him but he has no feeling for her he just wants sexual pleasure and a son. He also does the same with Kate but she just goes with him for money nothing else. He betrays the maiden when he ditches the maiden for her sexier, younger cousin Kate. The female roles are basically about the women that have fallen for this wealthy Lords charm then the lord will use these girls for his pleasure. The themes in ‘the Seduction’ are almost the same but vary in certain ways because it is a more modern poem and substances like alcohol and drugs are involved where as in ‘Cousin Kate’ it is more a case of true and pretend love. First of all I will go through the love that the teenage girl drunkenly displays towards the boy. Because she was drunk she wasn’t in the right state of mind so wasn’t thinking straight when she was supposedly falling in love with him. I cannot explore the element of marriage because there is no type of marriage in this poem at all. Motherhood comes into the poem after she discovers that she pregnant in the way she nurturers the baby when it is in her womb and also because she suddenly realises that she is going to miss out on having fun with her friends or have the romantic walks hand in hand with a boy. The teenage boy abuses his power over the girl by abusing the situation and getting her even more drunk than she already was so that he can go through with his plan to have sex with her. The teenage girl feels betrayed by her magazines because they portrayed the image to her saying that her first time would be romantic. She also feels betrayed by the boy as he promised her that he would take her out sometime but he left her and she didn’t see him after that. The role of the female character is to be the target of the teenage boys lust. In both of the poems there are morals in ‘Cousin Kate’ the moral is don’t go with someone just for money or find out a about his personality before going with him and in ‘The Seduction’ the moral is learn to handle your drink and don’t leave with someone you don’t know or can’t trust. The Cottage Maiden show a lot of emotions in the poem and the poem was written in first person so that the writer can express those feeling better. When you write in first person you can express the emotions as though they are your own and it also makes the poem one sided, as you don’t hear any of the lord’s point of views. The mood in the poem is grief-stricken and down as the cottage maiden is always speaking with a non-happy attitude until the end where she becomes unconcerned about her cousin Kate’s fate with the lord as if that her fault she picked that fate and she got what she deserves and that’s that which I think is a bit of a selfish laid back attitude and isn’t right. Christina Rosetti uses a lot of imagery to describe the feelings of the cottage maiden e.g. â€Å"your love was writ in sand† which doesn’t mean that she actually wrote how much she loved him it means that her love wasn’t true it was gone before she even meant it. In â€Å"The Seduction’ Eileen also uses imagery e.g. â€Å"with his eyes as blue as iodine† this uses the image of blue iodine but iodine is actually a yellowish brownie colour which also suggests that Eileen was again implying the idea of how drunk the girl actually was. The mood in ‘The Seductions’ changes half way through because the girls attitude changes from an all starry eyed drunken girl who falls in love with a teenage stranger to a emotional broken down wreck who hates the boy because of what he did to her. Another way that the writers get imagery and mood across to the reader is by using figures of speech like metaphors, personification, similes and rhetorical questions. When the writers use these they help to create the mood of the poem for example when Christina uses the rhetorical question â€Å"why did the great lord find me out, and praise my flaxen hair?† this creates the mood of despair which means a over whelming sadness and she’s wondering â€Å"why did he pick me and ruin my life I could have been pure and had a better future than what he’s left me with.† Another figure of speech is where Christina uses the metaphor â€Å"I could have been a dove† this doesn’t mean that she would actually been a dove, the dove is a sign of purity which when she uses it in this sentence she means that the cottage maiden would still be innocent. In ‘The Seduction’ Eileen uses the simile â€Å"green as a septic wound† to describe a dirty old river by which the boy truants and gets ‘high’ from taking drugs, she uses this simile to create a depressing mood because it is such an unromantic, disgusting place he has taken her to and by this point in the poem the reader knows something isn’t going to go the way the girl planned. The place that the boy takes her to is described in a few different ways, another way is â€Å"far from the blind windows of the tower blocks† and this describes the place as hidden away from the rest of the world and this also gives a reason why he does what he does here and that is because there won’t be any witnesses to back up any court case the girl might have put against the boy. The male characters in the two poems are both deceiving characters that use charms to get what they want and in both cases it is a girl they want to use for sexual intercourse. They are presented as cunning men who only desire one thing, sex. They treat the women with disrespect to quote ‘cousin Kate’ â€Å"he wore me like a silken knot† which means that he treats her as he would treat a piece of clothing easy taken off or put back on when wanted. Now I will quote ‘The Seduction’ with â€Å"She giggled, drunk and nervous, and he muttered ‘little slag'† this suggests that he doesn’t care who the girl is as long as he gets what he wants and it also suggests that he will take advantage of any girl no matter how drunk she is. In my opinion the writer wants us to feel that they are selfish cruel men as both the writers describe them in this way, to quote ‘Cousin Kate’ â€Å"He saw you at your fathers gate, chose you and cast me by† this indicates that he doesn’t care about the maidens feelings when he casts her by he just wants a better looking girl that suits his every need but he does not yet know that Kate is unable to produce a child otherwise I predict he would also cast her by. The female characters are the foundations for both of the poems and we know more about them than we know about any of the male characters. We know that both of the main female characters suffer from an unwanted pregnancy and are presented as young innocent girls who are seduced by the male characters and both are left to carry the burden and shame of their unwanted pregnancies. The girls have a few different ways of reacting to their situations they react by being upset, disillusioned, bitter, frightened and angry to quote ‘The Seduction’ â€Å"And on that day, she broke her heels of her high white shoes (as she flung them at the wall). And realised for once that she was truly truly frightened, but more than that cheated by the promise of it all† this suggests that she becomes frightened by the thought that she can never regain her innocence and dreams. They are then both stereotyped by society as being ‘loose women’, the type that sleeps with any man. In the ‘olden days’ single pregnant women would be cast out of society, very poor and classed as the lowest of the low where as today they would receive all types of benefits from the local government and would not be frowned upon. The cottage maiden is a strong character because she has chosen to live and raise her son independently without the help of the Lord but the teenage girl is more afraid of societies reaction to her pregnancy and wants to run away from the shame. I think the poems are both wake up calls to open our eyes to see the poverty that goes on around us and even though they are set in different times that, message will always need to be heard as poverty is always going to be there whether we like it or not. I respect only the cottage maiden in ‘Cousin Kate’ because of the way she way mistreated but stayed with the Lord because she of the true love she showed towards him and then when he throws her love away for Kate, she becomes a stronger women and embraces society so that her and her son can live a happy life. Society has change a lot over the last 150 years because now everyone is treated as an equal and it doesn’t matter what religion, race or his or her class is, I am not saying that stereotyping doesn’t happen as that will always be an ongoing factor of life. In conclusion, we can see that the poems are very similar in there themes as they are both about girls that get seduced into having sex or a sexual relationship. Both poems also have the same moral behind them, get to know the person before you go to far develop a sexual relationship.

Top Notch Tech Essay - 742 Words

Landing a Top-Notch Tech Internship One of my main goals this year is to land a top-notch internship with a technology company. I have been trying to read as much as possible on the best ways to accomplish this. There are many books and articles that have helped me, offering advice on interviews and what sort of skills I need to develop to obtain one of these internships. An article that I read â€Å"How to land a top-notch tech internship — and a tech job — while you’re still in school† by Michael Deng, gave some great input and I think it impacted my sense of professional identity and pertains to my goals that I have set this year. The article opens by talking about how each student needs a strong foundation. After completing your resume, have peers and teachers review it to make sure that it makes sense to future employers. Finally applying and interviewing are the final pieces for internships. One great way to get recruited for an internship is by emailing the recruiter directly. The article stated that LinkedIn is a great way to get the email of the recruiter. Follow up the email in week if there is no response, keep it concise and attach your resume. After contacting the company, an interview will most likely be set up next. There are many books that are recommended to get an idea of what might be asked. The article advised reading â€Å"Cracking the coding interview† which will help prepare programmers for technical interviews. Mock interviews are a great way to practice your responses to get an idea of what you want to say. Deng explained there are 4 stages for most technology companies, the coding challenge, recruiter chat, phone interview, and onsite interview. It is important to be enthusiastic throughout these stages, be prepared, think out loud, and ask any questions that you may have. Thinking out loud is critical because recruiters want to see how you approach problems and what your thought process is.
